A criminal indictment from the state of New York for alleged fraud related to a $25 million campaign to build a wall on the southern U.S. border was expected to be handed down on Thursday, according to reports.
According to multiple reports, the New York case against Bannon is related to an earlier federal case in which he was pardoned by Donald Trump.
According to the Washington Post, the New York case against Bannon is being led by the Manhattan district attorney and the state's attorney general.
The federal investigation against the former president's adviser, Steve Bannon, accused him of using up to $1 million of the $25 million he raised for a wall along the U.S. southern border for his own purposes.
In a statement on Tuesday night, Bannon implied that the charges against him were politically motivated.
The Manhattan district attorney's office opened its own investigation into the case after the federal case against Bannon was pardoned by Trump. The case stems from a campaign that raised $25 million dollars to build a portion of the U.S.- Mexico border wall on private land. One of Donald Trump's campaign promises was to build a wall along the southern border. Some of the funds were used for private expenses such as paying hotel and credit card bills, buying jewelry, and buying a golf cart. Brian Kolfage, an Air Force veteran, and Andrew Badolato, a Florida venture capitalist, pled guilty in the Federal case against them. A mis trial was declared for the other associate.
According toForbes, Steve Bannon will hand himself in on Thursday.
