A new malaria vaccine shows promising results

M ost diseases used to kill a lot of children, but now they are vaccine preventable. It is an exception. Most of the people who died in 2020 were African children under the age of five. The first candidate vaccine trial took place in the 1940's, and more than a hundred jabs have been in development since.

The Malaria parasites are more complicated than the Viruses. The first successful vaccine was created by Glaxosmithkline. The World Health Organisation approved it in 2021. Improvements are on the way after the results of a vaccine were reported. The jab was developed at Oxford University. A substance called Matrix- m was developed by Novavax for its covid-19 jab. Almost half of people get malaria each year in a trial in Africa. 450 children were part of the trial. One group received the vaccine with a lower dose of the adjuvant, another group received the vaccine with a higher dose of the adjuvant, and a third group received the vaccine and didn't know it. The children were given three jabs in four weeks and a booster in a year. They were followed for a year to find out how many people got sick with the disease.
