At Apple's Far Out event, the company showed off all the gadgets it is ready to sell. The new iPhone 14 has a larger sibling, and the Pros have a punch hole in its display. The hole is called a "Dynamic Island" because the screen around it will change in size for notifications. All of the added ruggedization extreme-sports types have been waiting for was added to the Watch Ultra. The H2 chip added to the AirPods Pro gave it better noise cancellation. It was a show that focused on quality-of-life changes for these devices, with some features you might consider neat, but nothing that would make you camp outside an Apple Store to be first in line to buy.

The 6.1-inch standard model and the 6.7-inch Plus variant of the phone are the same size as the regular model. The poor battery life of the mini made it a poor seller. The new phones are focused on better camera upgrades. The rear camera has a bigger sensor and can be used to take selfies. If you drop a phone on your face in bed, the 14 Plus is a little lighter than the Pro siblings.

iPhone 14 Pro hands-on: Don't call it a notch

The always-on display is an exciting feature.

As it tries to put more water between its flagship handsets and those in the ultra-premium tier, Apple decided to save most of the big upgrades for the iPhone 14 Pro and Max. For the first time, users will be able to see an always-on display with the new A16 Bionic chip. The Dynamic Island, a punch hole, and the camera that can bleed into the display around it make it look like a notification window. The rear lens got an upgrade with Apple promising it will have dramatically improved low light performance.

Apple kills off the SIM tray on the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro in the US

This may impact travelers pretty hard.

The first phone in the range to use eSIM technology will be the iPhone 14. There is a hole in the phone that can be eliminated for better security. It is a bit of a thumbed nose for travelers who might prefer to swap their sim cards when on the go. If you smash your device, you can't just put your phone back in the box.

The Watch 8 gets some sensor upgrades but looks much like its predecessor.

Billy Steele spent some time with Apple's new Watch Ultra, which has an action button on the side opposite the crown. The 49mm timepiece has a 2,000 nit display and is good for rough environments. The promises the company made here are going to be worth testing because Apple products are always a little less rugged than we might think. Can this device replace the hardcore Garmin for you?
