From the inside, the traditionalists hold the power, as a result of this split view of the genre. Country music has become the standard for everyone. There is so much to celebrate as country music has become more diverse and less male. The singer wants you to know that. I feel like a woman for everyone.
There is a lot of change in country music. Only one Black artist, Breland, has a nomination, and powerhouses like Mickey Guyton and Brittany Spencer were not. Morgan Wallen, who was caught on video drunkenly shouting the n-word, is a nominee for the Entertainer of the Year award. Many of the people who make up the country music industry are beholden to country radio, and that will not change quickly. Despite selling millions of records and winning the album of the year award without much support from country radio, Kacey Musgraves is the exception.
As Tucker Carlson suggested that Maren Morris be kicked out of country radio, Brittany Aldean nodded her head. It seems retrograde outside of country. It calls for the country establishment to punish Morris, who is one of the few women who gets consistent radio play.
We don't have to treat country radio as the only arbiter of what's important. Hunter Kelly is the host of Apple Music Country's Proud Radio and Kelly McCartney is the host of Record Bin Radio. Black artists and audiences are supported by the organization Black Opry. Country Queer has been covering lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer artists in country for years. The author of Her Country chronicled how women fought for their place in the genre.
The old story of country music is easy to understand. The lazy thing to do is it. Maren Morris is a well-known artist who is pushing back against anti-trans sentiment. There is a shift underway to get country music out of the hands of people who don't like it. The microphone remains in the possession of the gatekeepers. Some of us left the room because we wanted to hear ourselves.
