Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has shot down the idea that the company will ever adopt a format that will make it easier to send high-quality messages, videos, and photos to each other.
During a panel at Kara Swisher's final Code Conference yesterday, Cook was asked why Apple has not yet adopted support for the RCS standard, despite repeated calls from the industry for the company to do so. Cook said that they don't put a lot of energy in on that at the moment.
Because of the lack of RCS support on iOS, it's hard for users to communicate normally, and they have to use third-party messaging platforms. Cook said that he and his mother couldn't send photos and videos to each other because she used an phone. Cook told the reporter that he wanted to buy his mother an Apple product.
Apple has kept only iMessage and the SMS standard on the iPhone but has supported and led the industry in adopting RCS. Cook's recent comments show that Apple is not likely to change its mind anytime soon.
The emails show that Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, wanted to make it easier for the two platforms to communicate.
