Tim Cook suggested to a journalist at the Code Conference that they buy an Apple product. He said "I don't hear our users asking that we put a lot of effort into that." Cook joked that he should buy his mother an Apple product.

The debate about a common smartphone messaging format is bound to get more heated with that. Last month, Apple was shamed by Google for promoting the RCS as a way to allow for better interoperability between the two operating systems. The "green bubble" seen by iPhone users when they receive a text message is something that can be eliminated by doing so.

During the trial, internal documents showed that Apple considered offering iMessage to users of the operating system. A former Apple executive said in an email that "iMessage amounts to serious lock-in" when he was a marketing chief.

Cook said that Apple isn't addressing RCS at this point, but he didn't completely rule it out. The green bubble issue is mostly US-centered, as users in other countries prefer non-SMS apps.
