Emergency messages can be sent via satellite even when cellular and internet connections are not available.

For those of you who are curious about how it works, we want to highlight some of the features.

When It Works

If you need to send an emergency message when you're out of range, you can use satellite connection.

It was designed to be used in open spaces with a clear line of sight to the sky, so performance may be impacted if there are trees nearby.

Messaging Options

It's not possible to make phone calls using the satellite feature, but you can send text messages. When you're connected to the internet, the iPhone will ask vital questions to assess your situation, and it will send that information to emergency personnel.

Text messages are three times smaller with Apple's compression method.

If you are in an area where emergency services can receive text messages, the text message will be sent directly, otherwise it will go to a relay center with Apple trained specialists that will be able to place an emergency call for you.

Accessing Satellite Connectivity

If you want to use satellite function on your phone, you need to connect to a satellite in the sky, and the iPhone will walk you through where to get it.

Time Delays

If you have a clear view of the sky, a short message can be sent in 15 seconds, but it can take a while if there are obstructions.

Find My Integration

Even when there is no cellular or internet connection, iPhone users can share their location over Find My, which provides additional security for hikers in remote areas.

Crash Detection

There is a dual-core accelerometer in the iPhone 14 that can detect G-force up to 128Gs and a high dynamic range gyro that can detect crashes. Crash Detection pairs with emergency satellite to allow you to get help if you crash in a remote area.

Globalstar Partnership

The SEC filing states that Apple is working with Globalstar on a feature. 85 percent of Globalstar's current and future network capacity will be used to support Apple's phones.

All resources, including personnel, software, satellite systems, and more, will be provided and maintained by Globalstar.

Pricing

All iPhone 14 users will get two years of free satellite internet, even though Apple has not given a price for the service.

Availability

In the United States and Canada, you will be able to use satellite internet on the iPhone 14.

Launch Date

Satellite will be used to launch Emergency SOS.
