The first studio in the US to unionize is closing. Vodeo Games said on Wednesday that it had not been able to get funding to make an additional release. Vodeo Games said they were unable to get funding for their next project from publishers and investors. We have run out of funds and are unable to keep the team together.
Vodeo Games was created by Asher Vollmer. Its first game was released that year. Vodeo was working on a new project at the time of the announcement. The studio will finish work on the steam version before closing.
Vodeo's all-remote team of 13 successfully unionized at the end of last year. The studio's union was recognized by the management of Vodeo Games. The studio couldn't get additional funding so negotiations came to an end. The group promised to share what it learned with other industry workers.
Vodeo Games has announced that it has closed its doors. Vodeo Workers United (CODE-CWA) were in the process of collective bargaining but had not yet reached an agreement when it became clear the studio was no longer financially viable. Therefore we decided to halt bargaining.
