Apple is adding a limited form of satellite connection to new phones that will allow users to send an alert when they are off the grid. It will alert emergency services with your location and circumstances.

If you have an updated wireless chip in your phone, you can use the emergencySOS feature if you get injured in the wilderness.

Assuming they can get it to work, T-Mobile and Starlink, the new feature is different from the satellite-based data and text connections they receive. Those are cell towers that are strong enough to reach and receive signal from the surface, while Apple is partnering with Globalstar, a traditional satellite operator that uses bands that normally require a special antenna.

Because of this, users will need to point their phone at the satellite, which is too small to see, so Apple created an orientation app that helps you point it in the right direction. Once you are locked in, you can choose between a few preset messages, such as what's the emergency, is anyone hurt, and so on.

We will double check the capabilities when more information is available.

If there is any tree cover or alignment that isn't good, expect the process to take a few minutes. It is a one-way conversation and no one will be returning your call immediately. The ground station will relay your distress signal to the emergency services.

The service will be free for two years in the US and Canada, though Apple did not say what it would cost after that time. By that point, Starlink will likely have their services up and running, and the former at least aims to provide emergency text and SOS capability for free around the world.
