Everything Apple Announced (September 2022): iPhone 14, Apple Watch Ultra, AirPods Pro

It is September, so you know what to expect with the phone. Apple unveiled its annual updates to its mobile devices at an event today. There are four new phones, an upgrade to the Apple watch, and a new pair of headphones.

Both the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro are new.

Were you a fan of the idea of a small phone? It's too bad. The new iPhone 14 Plus is below the top-tier iPhone 14 Pro and the top-tier iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Pro Max sibling has a 6.7 inch screen. There are 6.1-inch displays for the standard-sized iPhone 14 and the Pro version.

The Pro models are the ones that will see most of the changes this year. The notch, which held the sensor components necessary for Face ID, has now been replaced by a pill-shaped cutout. You won't have to use your phone to see notifications or the time of day now that there's always-on display support.

The Pro models are the only ones with the A16 processor. It is the first time in the history of the non-Pro iPhones that they are sticking with a previous year's chip, but this is likely due to supply chain constraints and to keep costs low. You won't get the best performance from the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 14.

The primary camera on the Pros will move away from 12MIPs and use a 48MIPs sensor, which is a common trait among mostANDROID phones. It doesn't mean better photos, but it will allow you to capture more detail, and you can print your photos at larger sizes. In 8K resolution, the Pro iPhones can be used. Since the screens in most of our homes aren't big enough to showcase the benefit of 8K resolution, it may be useful to crop into your footage.

The Apple product is available on September 16. The Apple product will be available on October 7. Both the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max are priced at over $1,000. Preorder on September 9 and they will be on sale on September 16.

The Apple watch is Ultra.

Every year, Apple makes watch updates that are iterative. Why fix it if it isn't broken? The extra rugged and tough Ultra Watch is the most exciting Apple announcement since the Series 4.

Scott Jurek, an ultra running celebrity, was consulted by Apple to help design the Ultra. The watch was designed to appeal to the over $500 adventure market. With a case measuring 49mm, this is Apple's biggest watch ever, which allows it to boast an improvement that we've been anticipating for a long time: Slightly better battery life! The Ultra gets up to 60 hours in an extended power mode, according to Apple. The Instinct 2 can be charged on a single charge and can be used for up to three weeks.

The other changes are very interesting. The Ultra is covered in titanium and has a display. You can change which sports you track with a press with a new action button. Even in places like cities or under tree cover, a precision dual-frequencyGPS system can track your location. A bigger display makes it easier to see all the new advanced fitness metrics that will debut in WatchOS 9.

There are three different bands that are designed to keep the big watch on your wrist. Divers will be able to use the Ultra as a wrist-mounted dive computer thanks to a new app from Apple.

That's the most surprising part of the announcement. The Apple Watch is expensive. You can pre-order it today and it will ship in September. A basic weekend camping trip requires two and a half days of battery, but we are getting closer.

Apple Watches Series 8.

Most of the Apple Watch improvements went to the Ultra, so if you already own a Series 7 watch, you won't need to upgrade to the new Series 8. Although I feel obligated to point out that a similar temperature sensor has existed on other watches for years, the new body temperature sensor is the highlight of this year. In a post-Roe world you might want to rethink whether you track that information.

Crash Detection can be found on the Ultra and on the iPhone. Two new motion sensors, an improved gyro, and a high G-force accelerometer are used to detect a severe car crash and connect you to emergency services. Apple announced a new Low Power mode that can give you up to 36 hours of battery life by disabling features such as the always-on display. International roaming will now be supported by cellular models.

The same chip as the Series 8 is used in the new Apple Watch with crash detection. Three months of Apple's fitness+ service will be included in the Series 8 price. The price is $249 for the se. The watches will be on sale. It is time for the Series 3 to be poured out.

The second generation of AirPods.

The last version of the AirPods Pro are the new ones. There aren't a lot of differences in looks but there are some changes in the guts.

Apple claims the new H2 chip in the second generation AirPods Pro improves sound quality and noise canceling abilities. The battery life is better at 6 hours listening time and 30 hours total. Compared to other wireless earbuds, it is still on the low end. You can use your finger to change volume on the stems of the buds. Motion detection in the new Pros has been improved by Apple.

The case for the AirPods Pro gets some improvements, most notably the ability to charge on an Apple Watch puck, and to sync with Apple's Find My app, to help you locate them when they're lost. Preorder the new AirPods on September 9 and they will be available the following day.

On September 12th, if you have an Apple Watch or an iPhone, you will get a software update.
