The new Watch Ultra line was one of the highlights of today's event. But tucked away amidst the news torrenting out of Cupertino, Apple announced on Wednesday that iOS 16, which all this new hardware runs, will be available as a free download. Not everyone will be able to upgrade.

New features in the updated operating system include a redesign of the lock screen that is focused on communication, sharing, and intelligence, as well as more expansive wallpaper options, enhanced messaging capabilities, and improved Live Text performance. The service will be free for the first two years, but no pricing has been released.

You won't be able to use the new OS if you have an older phone.
