The portrait of Barack Obama will be unveiled at the White House on Wednesday.

The artist Obama chose to paint his portrait, Robert McCurdy, is known for his oil paintings with sparse background and no props.

The center of the canvas is where Obama stands in a black suit and grey tie.

The less that's added to the painting, the more emotional and historical the viewer will be.

He told the White House Historical Association that it would be different for each one. We want the viewer to be able to project onto the sitter.

McCurdy hoped that one day he would be able to paint Obama as well. The White House reached out to him so he wouldn't have to ask.

Sharon Sprung described her work as contemporary realism. She is sitting on a sofa in the Red Room.

The White House Historical Association's president said the portraits are "strikingly different" than previous ones.

"I think it's fitting with their interest and their taste and how they want to be represented and how they want to be remembered." I think we'll see more of this in our future presidents.

Today's media is saturated with images of the White House occupant, unlike when Americans learned what their presidents looked like through paintings and drawings.

When we think of our presidents and first ladies, this is something that they get to choose that reflects them. We learn more about them doing that.
