  • One day, a woman of color might be elected president, but she had doubts about it.

  • She admitted that she sometimes believed that she lived in a country that wouldn't allow that to happen.

  • She said her time in Congress made her realize that a lot of people in the country hate women.

In a new interview, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke candidly about her political future, expressing doubts that she or another woman of color could become president because of the "misogyny" and "patriarchy" she says she's experienced as a congresswoman.

She admitted in an interview that she sometimes believed that she lived in a country that wouldn't allow it.

She said her experience in Congress gave her a front-row seat to how many people in this country hate women.

They don't like women of color. People want to know about the future. I don't know if I'll be alive in September. It's very heavy on me.

She has experienced hostility from her fellow colleagues on both sides of the aisle since winning her primary. She was called a "fuck bitch" by Ted Yoho. In November of last year, a Republican congressman, Paul Gosar of Arizona, posted a video of himself killing a woman. In July, a conservative comedian used racist language and sexually harassed a woman.

Right-wing media and conservative circles have made her a target and she has received death threats. She was afraid of being raped and killed as the Capitol was attacked.

The right wing isn't the only one. Left, right, and center are all affected by misogynisty. She said that the grip of patriarchy affects all of us.

Questions about a presidential run have been dismissed by the lawmaker. There is a conflict between her belief that anything is possible and her belief that the presidency is impossible for someone like her.

She said that sometimes little girls want her to be president. I don't want to tell a little girl what she can't do, so it's hard for me to talk about it. I don't want young people to know what's impossible. I haven't done that in the past.
