The two new phones are the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The new pill-shaped cutout that replaces the notch is the first big display redesign since the introduction of the iPhone X. Both devices have an always on display.
Tim Cook says the new pro lineup is the most innovative yet. The starting price for the iPhone 14 Pro is $999 and the starting price for the iPhone 14 Pro Max is $1,000. Both will be available for pre-order on September 9th.
The display is the first noticeable change with the new models. The notch will be replaced by a pill-shaped cutout that houses the Face ID components and a second cutout for the front-facing camera.
The proximity sensor behind the display has been moved to make notifications pop out of the notch in an animation. The Dynamic Island is called by Apple. Apple is leaning into how it uses the system for new notifications, as notifications and alerts will adapt and move around the pill shaped notch.
Apple showed a variety of ways the Dynamic Island will work in practice, including live activity and controls for music. Background tasks will move to the island when you make a gesture.
The always-on display on the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will work with the new lock screen feature in Apple's mobile operating system. Reminders, calendar events, and weather will be supported without the need for the phone to wake up. There is a sleep state for the wallpaper that will make it use less power.
The A16 chip is found inside the iPhone 14 Pro models. Apple's new chip focuses on power efficiency, display, and camera. Two of the high performance cores use 20 percent less power than their competitors, and four of the efficiencycores use a third of the chips from competitors.
The Dynamic Island feature is powered by the new A16 chips. For the first time in the history of the phone, it is moving away from a 12-megapixel sensor. The main camera has up to two times the improvements to low-light photography thanks to a quad-pixel sensor.
Most photos will be taken with a 12-megapixel binned photo. This allows Apple to crop the sensor in a variety of ways to deliver true 2x zoom. This will result in some great photos, and the new sensor will even improve the details in Apple's ProRAW format.
A 3x improvement in low light is achieved by the ultra-wide camera. The flash on the camera system on the phone is twice as bright and responds to the focal length of the photo.
The iPhone 14 Pro models can be used to shoot video. The 4K resolution can be achieved at 30 and 24 frames per second.
Compared to the modest upgrade to the iPhone 13 Pro models last year, the iPhone 14 Pro has a 120Hz ProMotion high refresh rate display and three all-new cameras. On the Android side, there are two devices that combine a phone and a device into one, one of which folds in half.
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on September 9.
