The regular iPhone won't be getting a new processor this year, instead it will be powered by Apple's A15 chip, the same chip that's in the iPhone 13 Pro This is the first time since the 2008 iPhone 3G that Apple has not updated to a new processor for the flagship phone.
The company says that the A16 processor in the iPhone 14 Pro is more power efficient than previous models.
It isn't surprising that the standard iPhone 14 won't get a new chip. The move for months has been predicted by analysts and reporters, and the chip shortage isn't over yet. The manufacturer of Apple's chips already has experience making chips that are tried and true. When inflation is high, the older chip could keep prices down.
There is a question of longevity for the A15, even though it still beats the latest chips from both companies in most benchmark tests. While Apple has a great track record when it comes to long-term software support for its phones, I still have to wonder if the iPhone 14's chip means that it'll get one or two feweriOS updates.
