The shape of Efron's face changed after he recovered from a jaw injury.
The actor had plastic surgery according to a photo that went online.
As a result of the injury, the chewing muscles around his jaw became larger.
In an interview with Men's Health, Efron said that he had a jaw injury and physical therapy that made his face look different.
In April 2021, Efron appeared in an Earth Day special. Images from the event prompted intense online discourse dubbed "Jaw-Gate" in which people speculated about whether Efron had gotten a number of different procedures.
The actor told Men's Health that he broke his jaw when he tripped and fell on the fountain. Some of the muscles in his face and jaw had to work harder to recover from the injury.
The masseters are located on the side of the face from the cheekbone to the lower jaw.
He said that the masseters had grown. They are really big.
When his mom asked if he had plastic surgery, Efron said he wasn't aware of the online rumors. He told Men's Health that since his "High School Musical" fame, he's avoided social media except to promote specific projects.
He wouldn't be able to do this work if he valued what other people thought of him.
