Target CEO Brian Cornell is different from other CEOs.

He was the first outside hire to lead Target. According to the company's website, he leads Target's 400,000 or so employees in about 2,000 US stores.

Doug McMillon went from working at Walmart for $6.50 an hour as a high school student to running one of the world's most powerful companies.

Cornell spent his youth working odd jobs and low paying retail jobs to get to college. He embarked on a decades-long career in the business, during which he held down roles at some of the biggest companies in the world.

Cornell's tenure at Target is expected to be longer than those of previous executives. Cornell was allowed to stay on for three more years as a result of the retirement age being thrown out.
