Manager Buck Showalter told reporters on Wednesday that the New York Mets ace would be placed on the injured list.
Tim Healey @timbhealeyBreaking: Max Scherzer is going on the injured list, Buck Showalter said. The Mets expect him back when eligible.
It has been that way for Scherzer. The veteran ace missed seven weeks in his debut season with the Mets after suffering a strained left oblique, and he caused a stir when he left a start early with left side fatigue.
The injury did not end up being serious. Almost immediately, he downplayed it.
He told reporters the day after leaving that there wasn't anything sharp that was grabby. It's dull everywhere but the oblique.
He's 9-4 with a 2.26 earned run average when he's healthy.
His addition and the return of Jacob deGrom have given the Mets one of the best punches in baseball.
The combination of that duo and New York's fearsome lineup makes them one of baseball's true title contender, and the return of Max Scherzer in the middle of the month should help alleviate concerns that he won't be ready for the playoffs.
