The Associated Press called the Massachusetts Republican primary for Diehl, who is leading his moderate opponent by 10 points with most of the votes counted.

If Healey is elected, she will be the first woman and openly gay governor of Massachusetts.

In the blue state of Illinois, incumbent Governor J.B. Pritzker will face far-right state senator Darren Bailey, whose victory in the Republican primary was aided by both a Trump endorsement and tacit support from Democrats.

In Maryland, where Biden beat Trump by more than 33 points in 2020, a Trump-backed state legislator defeated an endorsed Republican.

In Arizona, a right-wing former television news anchor will take on the Democratic secretary of state in a race that will feature another Trump-endorsed candidate.

In Michigan, an incumbent Democratic Governor will take on a conservative commentator who defeated a Moderate in the Republican primary.

The Republican state Senator who has peddled Trump's baseless claims about a stolen election will face the state's Attorney General.

The governor's race in Wisconsin will feature the incumbent Tony Evers taking on Trump and businessman TimMichels who defeated Kleefisch in the Republican primary.

The strategy of elevating hard-right candidates in Republican primaries in several battleground states was used by the Democratic party. The Democratic Governors Association poured millions of dollars into ads attacking moderate Republican candidates in order to set up November clashes with candidates they believe will be easier to beat. Democrats are hoping that the hard-right platforms of the Trump-backed candidates will make them unpalatable for the state's moderate voters. The Democrat's controversial strategy has faced backlash for elevating candidates who have questioned the outcome of the 2020 elections.

The governor's race in Massachusetts has been endorsed by Trump.
