The New York Mets will place ace Max Scherzer on the 15-day injured list, the latest hit to a reeling club.
Mets manager Buck Showalter told reporters Wednesday that the right-handed pitcher is experiencing "irritation" in his left side.
The Mets expect the eight-time All-Star to miss only one or two starts during his latest IL stint, even though he was out for seven weeks earlier this season with a left oblique injury.
"It was actually pretty good news, all things considered, that there wasn't something torn or where he had the injury last time," Showalter said. The idea is to get it resolved so that he can finish the season strong and be ready for the rest of the season.
The Mets have lost five of their past eight games, including three in a row against the Pirates. The New York Mets had a big lead in the NL East on June 1 but are now tied with the Atlanta Braves.
The Mets have not yet announced the official roster move, which Showalter said would be retroactive to last Saturday.
He is 9-4 with a 2.26 earned run average in 20 starts for the Mets. The three-time Cy Young Award winner left his start against the Nationals due to fatigue in his left side, but he was able to return to the game.
Showalter said Wednesday that the Mets chose to put the pitcher on the disabled list to allow him to recover from his injury.
