The defeat by Dinamo Zagreb resulted in the dismissal of manager Thomas Tuchel.
After 20 months at the helm, the 49-year-old is leaving.
The coaching staff has been put in temporary charge by Todd Boehly.
The owners think it's the right time to hire a new head coach.
"As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition."
The club would like to say thank you to Thomas and his staff for all they did for the club. Thomas will have a place in the history of the club after he won the Club World Cup and the Super Cup.
The club's second European title was won four months later by Tuchel after he was named as the new coach.
Later that year, he added the Uefa Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
