The first Norwegian player to make a US Open semifinal is now in the final.

The fifth-seeded Ruud knocked off the 13th-seeded Matteo Berrettini on Tuesday to continue his strong run this year in Grand Slam events.

To have a chance at ending the US Open as the top-ranked player in the world, he needs to reach the final. The chance of leaving New York as the world's top ranked tennis player is extra motivation for him, but he doesn't want to think too much about it.

Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal can both finish the US Open as the top-ranked players because of the loss of Daniil Medvedev.

The man is 12-2 in Grand Slam events. It is the first time since 2000 that a Swedish man has reached multiple major semifinals in the same year.

The Italian competitor's powerful groundstrokes were absorbed by the German on the hard court, just as they were on the clay court.

• Advances to second major semifinal, with other coming at this year's French Open where he reached the final • 23-year-old Norwegian becomes first Scandinavian man to reach multiple major semifinals in the same year since Sweden's Magnus Norman (2000) • Won 11 of the first 13 games of the match; rallied from 5-2 down in the 3rd set, saving 2 set points

• Still in contention for ATP No. 1 ranking following US Open -- must make final to have a chance; last Scandinavian to hold the ATP No. 1 ranking was Sweden's Stefan Edberg (Oct. 1992)

In the first set, he produced just two unforced errors, and in the second set, he was up 6-1, and it looked like he was going to win. Berrettini, who was out for a number of times this season because of injury or illness, slowly began to find his usual level and appeared to have cracked the code in the third set when he broke Ruud in the second game.

Berrettini was broken in the ninth game and then never trailed in the tie break.

"That was a better start than I had before, but I had to temper my enthusiasm in order to win the match and advance to the semifinals," he said.

He said that sometimes people get over excited and think they can walk on water.

The semifinals will be played on Tuesday with either Nick or Karen playing.
