Storm rising.

The best sports weekends take place in October. A few days of dramatic playoff baseball, a good old fashioned upset Saturday in college football, and then a championship bout on Sunday.

Once the football season starts, Labor Day weekend is a good time to get ready for the races. College football is the featured pigskin product for the weekend and the first week of the U.S. Open. It is better to get sports fans back into the swing of things the following week with some people taking that final vacation before the end of summer.

Those who competed over the weekend received a treat. There were many sports moments from Friday to Monday. College football played a big part in it, but so did what happened at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Sports fans were treated to classics and left a lot for the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams.

Overtime basketball in Seattle, don’t mind if I do

There was a fight in the first game of the series. The toothpaste tube was being squeezed by the Chicago Sky and Connecticut Sun as they tried to get some points. The Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm went down in flames in the fourth quarter.

The game was still tied at 92-all at the three-minute mark of the third quarter. Breanna Stewart made three baskets in a row to keep the Storm in front. The pace of the game turned frenzied after Jewell Loyd made two free throws to put the game out of reach.

Tina Charles bricked both of her free throws when she was intentionally called for the foul. The extra step has been forgiven many times in basketball, especially in the forever Euro stepping NBA, after A'Ja Wilson bullied her way to the rim for a score. Sue Bird buried the corner three after the Storm had one last shot. The game is over because of a two point lead for the Storm.

It's wrong! A perfect out-of-bounds play for the score sent the game to overtime as time expired. The end of the fourth quarter was as crazy as anything you will see in basketball, as the Aces made six consecutive baskets to win in overtime.

Chaotic College Football, oh how we missed you

There was a game going on in all three main windows. It is a common occurrence for a college basketball game. With a chance to tie the game late in the fourth, Appalachian State went for a two-point conversion and failed, then the onside kick was returned for a touchdown by North Carolina. The game appeared to be over with 19 seconds left, but Appalachian State scored two plays later. They failed another two-point conversion.

The game should've been on most sports fans' radar. The two teams were both 12-2 last year. There was a thrilling end to this contest. The final two overtimes were crazy. The quarterback for Houston threw a beautiful back-shoulder pass for the two-point conversion. Frank Harris ran the two-point conversion for himself after throwing a dart into the end zone. The last score. Reggie Bush scored the winning touchdown in the overtime portion of the game when he somersaulted past the pylon.

There were a lot of fans at the game. Utah was the 7th ranked team in the country and wanted to start the season with a victory. At one point in the second half, four consecutive Utah drives ended with a touchdown. Utah only had to kick a field goal to tie the game after Florida scored its last touchdown. With 22 seconds left, CAMERON RISING threw an intercept in the middle of the end zone that was returned for a touchdown. There was a loud noise coming from the swamp.

There was something happening at the Superdome on Sunday.

It came full circle at the U.S. Open

Serena Williams' outstanding play allowed us to say goodbye for the entire week. It was one of the best matches of all time against Aija Tomljanovic. Williams dominated the tiebreak in the second set. But that was all she had left for the young Tomljanovic who won the match. One of the great careers in professional sports is over. The rest of the weekend bore Serena's mark. After losing to Naomi Osaka at the U.S. Open at the age of 15 years old, Coco Gauff now wants to be the top ranked player in the world. She played with a lot of intensity as she rolled Shuai Zhang. A young black man knocked off a legend. The four-set match was won by Francis Tiafoe. He told his father that he wanted to be a professional tennis player because he watched Serena and Venus Williams.

The GOAT can leave knowing that what she has done for more than two decades has an impact on how tennis will look at the end of the day.
