Brazil's Justice Ministry is upset that Apple didn't include charging in the box with new phones. According to a new piece of legislation from the governmental body, the lack of in-box charging is a deliberate discrimination against consumers. As a result of the ministry's ruling, Brazil is freezing the sale of all iPhone models that have been on the market since 2020, starting with the iPhone 12.
According to Apple, it could "avoid more than 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions." The Justice Ministry of Brazil rejected the statement because there was no evidence to back it up.
Brazil has previously taken issue with Apple's lack of in-box charging adapter. The company had to pay a customer a sum of money after they complained about the lack of charging stations.
While Brazil is just one country, and a $2.3 million fine won't completely break the bank for Apple, this could be the beginning of a shift for the company. A lot of major companies are releasing new devices that don't have to be plugged in. If more countries start speaking out, that could be a big problem.
Apple has been hit with a lot of anti-consumer claims around the world, with the European Union requiring it to drop its lightning port in favor of theusb-c by 2024. Shifting to a much more consumer-friendly model will hurt Apple's wallet as it's been dedicated to cutting its own costs. If the company wants to continue being the leader in its field, it will need to play ball with regulatory boards across the world.
