Luke Donald
Ryder Cup captain and former world number one will select teams for the Hero Cup

The Hero Cup is a new team match play contest designed to help Europe regain the Ryder Cup.

The Seve trophy was held eight times over the course of a decade.

The teams will be made up of players from Great Britain and Ireland.

The Hero Cup is going to be held in Abu Dhabi.

Donald wanted to bring back a team match play contest when he was appointed as the captain of the European team.

A number of former captains were strong advocates of how similar events in the past have benefited players who were pushing to make the team, as well as their own captaincy journey.

The Englishman, who took over as Europe's captain after the Swede was sacked for defecting to LIV Golf, was one of the vice-captains for the US's victory in the 2021.

All 20 players on the two teams will take part in each of the four sessions of the competition.

Performance on the Tour rankings will be taken into account when selecting teams for the Hero Cup.

The Hero Cup is clashing with the PGA Tour's tournament in Hawaii. It is one of the "elevated" events the American based circuit's top players have committed to playing in.

"We have a good model that works well on the Ryder Cup, but clearly every cycle you need to improve; we certainly needed to improve on the last time and we've looked at every aspect and listened to everyone."

The players who competed in June's inaugural Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf event from July's Scottish Open were banned by the DP World Tour and fined 100,000 dollars.

The suspensions were lifted before the event and as a result, LIV recruits are still eligible to play on the DP World Tour and earn points for the United States in the FedExCup playoffs.

The Hero Cup will have participants, but Kinnings didn't say whether they'd be chosen.
