Nadal lost in the US Open fourth round for the first time in his career.

The home crowd went crazy with the win over Nadal.

His bid for a record 23rd major singles title was ended by the defeats.

The fourth set was tied at three before Nadal won the next two to take a lead into the fifth.

He will face Rublev in the quarter-finals at the US Open.

He covered his face in disbelief as his victory was confirmed by a netted Nadal backhand.

He covered his face with a towel after thanking the crowd.

The fact that Nadal hasn't looked settled in New York this year doesn't mean he's not playing well.

Marin Cilic is the only Grand Slam singles winner left after the defeat.

Nadal undone by entertaining Tiafoe

Before withdrawing from Wimbledon with an abdominal injury, Nadal had a perfect record in Grand Slams this year, having won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon.

The injury limited Nadal's build-up to the US Open, where he lost to Borna Coric in the first round.

He had trouble with his serve in his second-round match against Fognini and also had trouble with his fluency in New York.

Nadal looked shorn of speed and confidence on his serve after changing his ball toss to protect the injury that ended his Wimbledon campaign.

The American came through to hold serve and then convert his third set point with a nice touch at the net.

After losing the first set, Nadal left the court and appeared to have something on his wrist.

Although his serve never clicked, he was able to take advantage of one poor Tiafoe service game at 4-5 in the second and was gifted the set.

In the third set, the American broke for a 4-3 lead with a fine backhand winner, and he closed it out with an ace.

Nadal roared at the crowd after saving a break point in the first game of the fourth set, and he was gifted an early advantage.

He showed no signs of nerves against Nadal despite some difficult losses.

He broke back immediately, helped by two Nadal double faults, and saved break points in his next service game with some great counter-punching, before breaking Nadal twice more to close out the match.

After the tournament, Nadal could move to the top of the rankings.

To become the world's number one, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Norway's Friud would have to reach the final.

The quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday with Alcaraz playing Cilic and Ruud facing Berrettini.
