Less than a week before the season opener, quarterback Lamar Jackson was throwing passes on the practice field for the Baltimore Ravens, showing once again that he's focused on playing for the Ravens this season.
John Harbaugh was asked after Monday's practice if there had been a discussion about Jackson not playing this season without a new contract.
Harbaugh said that Lamar has said he's focused on the season, he's under contract and he's going to have the best season he can have. We hope to get him a new contract. Business is the only thing remaining. There is nothing else other than agreeing to something.
Jackson missed the voluntary workouts for the first time in his five-year career, but he did not miss a practice all summer.
Harbaugh doesn't know if talks between the Ravens and Jackson are still going on. Jackson stated last month that Week 1 would be the cutoff point for negotiations.
Harbaugh did not have any new information. Football has been the focus of my interactions with Lamar. From a football perspective, he's been focused and locked in on that.
Jackson is one of the few players in the league who doesn't have an agent. He is going to speak to reporters.
Harbaugh said you don't hear about conflicting reports because neither Jackson nor Ravens officials have ever mentioned any animosity in negotiations.
Harbaugh said they were hopeful of getting him a new contract. It's all about business. Coming to something that's mutually agreeable is the only thing else. All of the deals are done that way. I'm very hopeful that it will be done.
In March, Deshaun Watson signed a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract, making him the highest paid quarterback in history. Steve Bisciotti acknowledged that the deal made negotiations with quarterbacks more difficult.
Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson are the two quarterbacks who have recently signed contracts. In July, Wilson got $165 million guaranteed, and Murray got $189 million.
Jackson's fifth year option will pay him $23.016 million this season. If the sides can't agree on a new contract by March of next year, Baltimore would have to use the franchise tag on Jackson to keep him from becoming a free agent. Jackson would get 45 million dollars.
"He's calm, cool and collected, he's beside him in the locker room, and he's been around him a long time," Morgan said about Jackson. It's great to see your quarterback come out and work hard.
The Ravens have high expectations this year. Houston said he would guarantee a Super Bowl win.
Houston believes that the power of the tongue can speak life and death. We will get that ring this year. I don't want to hope and wish we're going to get it. I will talk it into existence.
