In a speech in Philadelphia that the White House said was about a "battle for the soul of the nation," President Biden called out "MAGA Republicans" for their false claims of election fraud, and asked Americans to join him in defending the right to vote.

What’s happening

On Thursday night, President Biden gave a fiery speech in front of Philadelphia's Independence Hall in which he denounced "extremeMAGA ideology" and argued that former President Donald Trump and his followers endanger the very foundations of our republic.

Since Trump's loss in the 2020 election, the election denial has become a cornerstone of the "Make America Great Again" slogan.

Biden shied away from discussing Trump for most of his first year in office. Biden has adopted a new approach, choosing to aggressively rebuke Trump's conspiracies about the 2020 race and ongoing efforts toelect Republicans to key offices who could endanger future elections.

He said that the power to decide elections in America was being given to partisans and cronies.

At a donor event in Maryland, Biden referred to the "MAGA philosophy" as "semi-fascist".

Why there’s debate

Biden's speech and previous comments caused uproar among Trump supporters in the media. There is debate about whether the president's aggressive denunciations are an appropriate response to the threats posed by the MAGA movement.

Moderate politicians from both parties have criticized Biden. Hogan accuses Biden of contributing totoxic politics that's at the root of the nation's intense partisan divisions. Using words like fascist and authoritarianism, which evoke images of Nazis and dictators, is a step too far and may make it harder to convince voters that the MAGA movement poses a real threat to democracy.

Conservatives who oppose Trump have accused Biden of trying to cast all Republicans as extremists. Biden is accused of acting as if only Democrats care about the stability of American elections and of treating democracy as a partisan talking point.

Many people have applauded Biden for finally being willing to address the dangers of the MAGA movement and make the case to voters that democracy is on the ballot in the upcoming elections. They say that Biden's words are correct. They argue that if the president or the media does not condemn the campaign to undermine the electoral process, they are complicit in it.

What’s next

The wisdom, or lack of it, of Biden's approach could determine which party controls Congress after the election. Voters ranked threats to democracy as the top issue facing the country.

Perspectives

Backers

Biden's accusations are correct.

Biden's core claim that Trump and the GOP allied with him pose a threat is reasonable.

Biden went to great lengths to say that the MAGA extremists don't represent the majority of Republicans.

Biden drew a distinction between the two groups. Voters with strong Republican identities are starting to question Trumpism. Best to give them an off ramp that doesn't require them to change their political identity all at once.

It shows how broken the American political media is.

If you simply state the facts of the matter, you are making pro-insurrection beliefs a matter of Republican orthodoxy.

If they are given the chance, they will undermine the election.

A single victory for a GOP Secretary of State candidate in Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, or Pennsylvania would put the election at risk. This isn't speculation or Biden's opinion, it's what the Republican candidates have said themselves repeatedly.

Biden has a duty to make voters aware of the dangers of democracy.

Americans will be able to vote in the upcoming elections. Placing and keeping these people in power in the short term would likely lead to a one-party rule as well as massive restrictions on the liberties of racial, religious and sexual minorities. Every American has to face this hard truth. The president's job is to speak frankly to the nation.

Biden's statements needed to be said.

At a time when Biden's political standing is on the rise, it was a risky speech. It was absolutely necessary.

Critics

Trump and his allies get a boost from Biden's aggressive attacks.

The Trump phenomenon has always used the force deployed against it as a source of strength. The more Trump is named, the better.

Conservatives shouldn't be painted as anti-democracy.

Tax cuts, opposition to abortion, support for the Second Amendment, and the Supreme Court are all part of 'MAGA'. Everything has become 'Democracy'. Democrats are worried that if a majority of voters choose the Republicans, that will be undemocratic.

Biden is raising the temperature of the debate.

There are dangers to the use of political emotion. Raising temperatures will cause an emotional response on the other side. The Republican Party is going to start raising money for Americans who feel disrespected by the other side.

The language used by Biden makes it difficult to describe what the movement is doing.

It's not surprising that we reach for harsh language to convey the seriousness of our situation and the depth of our anger. False comparisons and empty words can be dangerous. They trivialize and oversimplify.

Policy issues that affect voters are the topics of debate.

The Democrats are going to scare the population with the Donald J. Trump monolith. Mr. Trump doesn't like gift horses in the mouth. Negative works for politicians. The first two years of Mr. Biden's presidency have become consequential because of this.
