"Top Gun: Maverick" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home," movies that were first released months ago, scored wins at the box office this Labor Day weekend.
"Top Gun: Maverick" made an estimated $7.9 million from Friday through Monday, making it the top film of the weekend. The extended cut of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was released in December of 2020. According to data compiled by The Hollywood Reporter, it came in third at the box office behind "Bullet Train" and "Crazy Rich Asians".
"Spider-Man" was projected to top the charts but dropped to third as more data was reported.
The re-release of "Jaws" made over $3 million for the 4 days. In 1975, "Jaws" was the first movie to open in theaters.
Movie attendance increased over the weekend as a result of the industry's first "National Cinema Day," a one-day event that featured heavily discounted tickets at more than 3,000 movie theaters. Movie theaters drew 8.1 million people in the year 2022, thanks to the $3 deal.
Industry insiders said the weekend was mostly a chance for theaters to show previews of upcoming releases to customers.
