The Dallas Mavericks are considering the addition of a ball-handling veteran to their roster before the season starts, according to an NBA Insider.

The Mavericks general manager and vice president of basketball operations were in attendance to watch Dennis Schrder.

Stein listed a number of possible options for Dallas in free agency.

The Mavs have a big hole in their backcourt after Jalen Brunson left to join the Knicks. They didn't have the salary-cap space to spend a large amount of money on another guard in free agency because they cashed in some of their trade assets.

Goran Dragi seemed like a good fit for the team because of his connection to Luka Doni.

Harrison has to pick over what is left.

Schrder has a career scoring average of 14.2 points on 43.6 percent shooting. He could make it easier for Doni to play. He averaged 7.9 assists per 100 possessions in his spells with the Boston Celtics and Houston Astros.

His trade to the Celtics in the middle of last season didn't boost his value, despite his disappointing spell with the Lakers.

The Mavs wouldn't be adding him to make a difference when they have Doni and Spencer as their primary guards. This close to the regular season, the 28-year-old is a sensible target.
