Ryan Kerrigan was named the Washington Commanders' new assistant defensive line coach.
Jeff Zgonina was promoted to defensive line coach on the same day that Sam Mills III was fired.
Kerrigan ended his playing career as Washington's all-time leader in sacks. The defensive line was coached by him during training camp.
Last week, Kerrigan said it was cool to see another end of football. You still get to be involved in the game and get to prepare for it. You don't hit your body. It has been a pleasure.
Montez Sweat and Chase Young will be helped by Kerrigan. Young will be on the physically unable to perform list for the first four games of the season after having knee surgery in November. Young had 1.5 sacks in 9 games.
During his time at Washington, Kerrigan recorded 95.5 sacks. He was one of the 90 greatest players in franchise history. In the playoffs, Kerrigan had 1.5 sacks, but he did not have a sack during the season.
