A source says the Cowboys have agreed to a deal with Peters to join their practice squad.
It gives Peters time to work into football shape and give the Cowboys some flexibility. Peters was cleared medically after visiting The Star.
The move comes after the Cowboys lost eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith until at least December because of a hammy. If Smith struggles at left tackle, the addition of Peters will give them insurance.
While competing for the starting left guard spot, Tyler Smith only started working at left tackle in two practices. The Cowboys will practice on Monday in preparation for their season opener.
Smith said last week that he was ready to help the team. It was sad to hear thatTyron got hurt. It's the nature of football to have something unfortunate happen to a key player. It was a huge shock to the program and I knew I'd have to fill that spot.
In his 18th season, Peters started 15 games for the Bears. The majority of his career was with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Cowboys do not have a veteran backup tackle, Josh Ball did not play as a rookies last season because of an ankle injury, and Matt Waletzko missed most of training camp with a shoulder injury that will require surgery.
Peters isn't in a team's conditioning program, so how quickly he gets up to speed is dependent on his shape. Peters has had injuries as well. He only played one full season in the last two years.
