Brendan Fraser said he felt a sense of being in a body of water.
At the Venice Film Festival, Fraser recalled acting in a heavy suit.
He said that he now appreciates people who are overweight.
Brendan Fraser said that he felt a sense of weakness when he removed his fat suit for the film.
Fraser plays a 600-pound man named Charlie who tries to repair his relationship with his teenage daughter in the film. Fraser had to carry an extra 50 to 300 pounds with him on set, according to the director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fraser said during a press conference for the movie that the movie gave him an "appreciation" for people with Obesity.
Fraser believes that the trauma he carries is manifest in the physical weight of his body. I had to relearn to move in a new way. I didn't know I had muscles. When all the appliances were removed at the end of the day, I felt like I stepped off the boat in Venice.
The 53-year-old actor said that he learned that he needed to be an incredibly strong person physically and mentally to live in that physical being. I believe that is Charlie as well.
Fraser told Vanity Fair that it was uncomfortable to wear the fat suit.
Fraser said that the torso piece was almost like a straight jacket, with sleeves that went on, airbrushed by hand, to look exactly like human skin.
A six-minute standing ovation was given to "The Whale" at the Venice film festival.
