The Cowboys were in a state of desperation when Tyron Smith broke his knee in practice.
Smith could miss the entire season if he returns before December.
Since the end of last season, there has been a lot of shuffling. Williams and Collins were both free agents.
Tyler Smith was drafted in the first round. Jerry Jones gave him a vote of confidence that he would be the starting left tackle.
Mike McCarthy has a safety net at left tackle in case Smith struggles in his first exposure to the NFL.
The Cowboys are hoping to make it to the playoffs. Peters is still an effective starter at the most important position on the offensive line despite not being an All- Pro.
After a long wait, Peters was able to join the Bears last year. He was the best offensive lineman on the team.

Peters was signed to a one-year deal by the Eagles. Dillard's injury moved him back to left tackle, even though he was supposed to play right guard.
After receiving a one year contract extension from the Eagles, Peters said he wanted to play for three more seasons.
He told reporters that he doesn't think he's going to stay that long. An extension of three years. I'll give them everything I have.
Peters signed with the Bills as a free agent after five years with the team. During his time at the University of Arkansas, he was a tight end.
During his prime, he became one of the best offensive tacklers of his time. He started 148 games in 12 seasons with the Eagles after they acquired him prior to the start of the 2009.
