The media license of Novaya Gazeta was revoked by a Moscow court on Monday after the outlet was forced to suspend operations due to the country's new censorship laws.

A Moscow area court invalidated Novaya Gazeta's license after Russian media regulators flagged the outlet for not submitting required documents.

The newspaper will appeal the decision.

The Russian supreme court is considering a case regarding the online edition of Novaya Gazeta.

Novaya Gazeta stopped publication in March due to pressure from the Russian government and new censorship laws enacted after the invasion of Ukraine. The outlet said it had been warned about the change in ownership documents. The publication was going to stop publishing until the end of the conflict in Ukraine because of the new Russian laws. All independent media outlets in the country have been wiped out as a result of the ban on the paper.

In June of this year, a reported sum of $103 million was raised by the auction off of the prize medal by Muratov.

The print version of Novaya Gazeta was invalidated by a court.
