After LSU's heartbreaking loss to Florida State, Brian Kelly is optimistic, but admits the Tigers have to play better. There is a time and a place.

Brian Kelly's debut as LSU's head football coach was drama-filled.

After coming back from 14 points down in the fourth quarter against Florida State and needing only an extra point to send the game into overtime, the tigers saw their comeback bid come to an abrupt halt when the defensive back blocked the kick.

Florida State blocked an LSU field goal in the first half.

The kicking game wasn't the only part of the game that the Tiger's struggled with. They didn't field a pair of punts and the FSU recovered both of them.

Kelly said "Mistake after mistake for us, particularly in the first half." There were more errors in the second half.

Kelly made it clear that he wasn't here to say that the team took any solace in the loss.

He said that we have some learning to do. We need to play better and coach better.

It wasn't a good start to Kelly's time at LSU. He was the first coach to lose his first game.

Kelly, who spent the previous 12 seasons at Notre Dame, signed a 10-year, 95 million dollar contract to join LSU, replacing Ed Orgeron, who was out less than three years after winning the national championship.

A number of transfers, including starting quarterback from Arizona State, were added by Kelly during the summer.

The blocked extra point appeared to be the game-tying touchdown, but it was later ruled that it was not. Daniels was behind an offensive line that was struggling and he was throwing the ball well. He had 114 yards on 16 runs.

Four times, Florida State sacked Daniels.

Kelly said the front was very good. There was a lot of pressure. The defensive ends were a challenge for a true freshman. They fought

The LSU star wide receiver had two drops and was held to two catches for 20 yards.

Boutte seemed to be upset at points during the game.

"Here's a great player trying to make plays, trying to do too much and trying to catch the ball before he has it," Kelly said. I wouldn't pay much attention to it. I think he knows that he has to let the game come to him.

In the first quarter, LSU's defensive tackle, Maason Smith, was injured. The former Freshman All-SEC selection was walking with crutches after returning to the sideline.

The Florida State quarterback evaded the LSU rush for most of the night and completed 20 of 32 passes for 260 yards and two touchdown. He was second on the team in rushing with 31 yards.

It was the first win against an SEC team for the FSU.

We learned that we have to coach better. Our kids need to be coached in a way where they are ready. I am responsible for that.
