A massive transformation known as "the Merge" is about to take place.

The upgrade will switch the transaction verification system away from Proof-of-Work, which uses huge amounts of computing power to verify transactions, in order to reduce the energy consumption of the system.

The proof-of-stake system will be replaced by a lottery that will determine who gets to verify transactions and who gets to win token.

According to Fortune, a single transaction of ether consumes as much energy as an average US household does during a full workweek. Vitalik Buterin, the most visible founder of the project, has been laying the groundwork for the last few years.

The upgrade was supposed to take place in 2016 but was delayed by the foundation. It seemed like it would happen earlier this summer, but was pushed back again.

Testing has been completed and it looks like the merge will happen on September 15. There are still many myths surrounding what will happen during the merge.
