Coco Gauff advanced to the US Open quarter-finals with a straight-set victory.
The American 12th seed won on her home court.
Gauff will play the 17th seed from France in the second round.
The 18-year-old said it felt crazy. I was trying not to smile as the stadium chanted my name.
She said that it felt like a three-set.
My mentality helped me today.
I'm so happy that I'm in the quarter-finals of my home Slam. The tournament has always been special to me. I'm very excited to continue playing and experiencing this atmosphere.
This is the furthest that Gauff has gone in New York.
It is only the second time in her career that she has reached the last eight at a Grand Slam, the other being at the clay court event at the French Open last year.
Gauff broke back immediately to cancel out her opponent's advantage after giving up the break in her first service game.
Gauff brokeZhang's serve in the last game of the opening set to serve out the set.
As the rain started to fall in the Bronx and the stadium roof was closed, Gauff made a nervy start to the second set, staring down the barrel of break point.
In the fifth game, Gauff threw in a lot of double faults, as well as saving two break points herself.
From that point on, Gauff began to assert control. The American saved a break point in the fourth game after the Chinese missed a set point.
Gauff said "she's obviously been playing really good tennis, I've been playing well too so I think it's going to be a great match"
I'm going to give it my all no matter what.
