Securonix says that hackers are using image files from the James Webb Space Telescope to spread malicious software.

A famous deep field image, part of NASA's first slew of Webb images revealed last month, but modified by hackers, was identified by the research team.

The malicious deep space image is included in a Microsoft office document that is being sent out by hackers.

Undetected

The code is very nasty and we don't know how widespread it is.

Securonix's researchers said that the image contained malicious Base64 code. At the time of publication, this particular file is not seen by any of the vendors.

The victim's system is able to be controlled by the hackers once they've beeninfecting it. Microsoft said earlier this year that it would reverse the decision it made last month.

Hacker Memes

It isn't the first time an image has been used to spread a malicious program. Other hackers have used images to hide their work.

Securonix says that using this kind of image for spreading this kind of code was not very common.

Scientists are puzzled because James is seeing stuff that shouldn't be there.
