A four-year extension signed by the New York Knicks wasn't the team's initial plan this off-season.

According to David Aldridge of The Athletic, the Knicks weren't all that convinced thatBarrett was worth a big extension and their priority was holding onto Quentin Grimes.

Over four years, the contract is worth up to 120 million dollars.

The Knicks would have preferred to wait until the October deadline to signBarrett or even next season as a restricted free agent.

He averaged 20.0 points, 5.8 rebound and 3.0 assists per game last season, and was going into the final year of his contract. His efficiency dropped from the previous year while shooting just 40.8 percent from the field and 34.2% from three. He had a 2.3 win share in the NBA.

The guard was not seen as a key part of the future by the front office after the Knicks struggled to a 37-45 record in the next two years.

The lack of alternatives on the trade market is likely to be the reason for the change in mindset.
