Satellite communications will be a thing of the past. T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer text services from its Starlink satellites.

It was only a matter of time before the company focused on the industry. Everyone from van lifers to remote outposts can now be connected to the internet thanks to the company's recent increase in internet availability. Cell communication is completely different.

If you need to reach someone in the most remote parts of the world, you have to use a satellite phone. Starlink can provide services to customers on existing T-Mobile networks using the phones they already have in their pockets.

The system roll-out will start slowly, with only text messaging being the first of the three major cell services users expect from their carriers. In the future, voice calls and data will follow, but there is no set date for that.

Starlink has come under scrutiny recently as it has continued to violate the rights of the astronomer. The FCC is trying to determine if the parent company of Starlink should be eligible for an $800 million prize pool promised to the entity that provides internet to rural communities.

Even though it has a lot of legal problems, it still has to deal with technical challenges. Modifications to its existing Starlink satellites will be required to support this new cellular infrastructure. Launching those satellites will require Starship to be operational, which still doesn't have a timetable other than possibly some time in the next few months

The company and its new cellular partner will have plenty of time to work on their agreement. There is time to get other cellular providers to join their collaboration. To become a truly global cell provider, the two companies will have to expand their coverage above and beyond the US. No one has stepped up to the plate yet, but there are definitely conversations going on behind closed doors.

The dream of technologists since the dawn of the internet has been seamless internet and cellular connections. The two companies have taken another step towards that. It's not clear what other people will join them.
