  • Samsung has filed a patent application for a new smartphone design.
  • The patent teases a dual-screen phone with a transparent display at the back.
  • It looks similar to ZTE's Nubia X, which debuted two years ago.

With an innovative design that will make its rear panel a lot more useful than just having a flat surface housing the camera island and brand logo, there's a chance that it will be taken to a new level by the company.

According to a patent application filed with the World Intellectual Property Office, a new type of phone with a transparent display at the back is being considered by the company. The second display blends in with the rest of the phone's back panel when not being used.

This week, the patent was published. The drawings depict an always-on display that flashes information even when the screen is turned off.

There are many use cases. It is possible that a second rear-facing screen will make it easier to take selfies. The second screen can show a live view of the subject.

The Nubia X was launched in 2020 and is similar to this one. The phone will have a real display on the back, according to the patent, which indicates that the phone will use a glass panel with a higher degree of transparency.

According to the patent document, the transparent display can expose at least a part of the second surface. There is a notification panel that could be used.

There is a chance that this idea will be abandoned at any time. If the patent is granted, it will lead to a new era of smartphone design that will bring dual-screen phones into the mainstream, as it has done with the foldable phones of the past.
