According to prosecutors, on June 6, 2020, a van containing firearms and bomb-making materials was attacked by a man. Several law enforcement officials were wounded in the incident.

A loose network of gun enthusiasts and militia-style extremists who connected online were believed to have ties to Carrillo. According to experts, the group started on the internet with the belief that there would be a civil war in the U.S.
On the day before the shooting in Oakland, Carrillo posted messages on Facebook asking people if they were "down to boog" and saying he was ready to act. He admitted firing 19 rounds from his homemade rifle from the back of a white van he was driving.
He wanted to carry out violent acts against federal law enforcement officers.
Following the killing of Floyd, a Black man, by a white Minneapolis police officer, hundreds marched on the streets against police brutality.
Robert Justus Jr., of Millbrae, was the driver in the California case. He is accused of murder and attempted murder.
After the shooting in Oakland, Carrillo was arrested by the sheriff's office.
