Some monkeys in Indonesia have been found to be using stones as sex toys.

According to a paper published this month in the journal Ethology, researchers observed the macaques rubbing stones on their genitals while studying their population. The researchers came up with the "Sex Toy" hypothesis.

The theorists were evaluated in a number of ways. Young males were more likely to engage in the behavior than older males, and it was often followed by a sexual response, such as an erection. The actions with the stone were linked to other sexual behaviors.

The data supported the theory that the behavior was sexual. The monkeys seemed to be performing a form of self-directed, tool-assisted masturbation, according to the author of the study.

According to the paper, monkeys may continue using tools for behaviors that are not directly tied to survival but have "pleasurable" or "self-rewarding" aspects.

Animals use tools. The otter uses stones to crack open shells to eat. Sea sponges are used by dolphins to kick up sand. monkeys use rocks to crack open nuts

Masturbating with objects is less common in animals than it is in humans. The purpose of most tool use is to survive.

The object-assisted masturbation is not adaptive or useful according to Cenni.

macaques live in an area where they have access to human food so they spend less time looking for food.
