New Yorkers under the age of 21 can't buy cans of whipped cream.

The law went into effect in November of 2021.

According to a US Drug Enforcement Administration factsheet, "Inhalants are invisible, volatile substances found in common household products that produce chemical Vapors that are inhaled to induce psychoactive or mind- altering effects."

One in five young people use inhalants like whippits by the time they reach eighth grade, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The New York law was sponsored by Sen. Joseph Addabbo of Queens.

After getting complaints about empty canisters on neighborhood streets, the need to limit the access and sale of whippits became apparent. "Use of whippits in our communities is indicative of a significant nitrous oxide abuse problem."

"Nitrous oxide is a legal chemical for professional use, but it can be extremely lethal if used wrong," Addabbo said. Young people buy and inhale this gas to get high because they think it is safe. The law will make it harder to get this dangerous substance for our kids.
