Carolina expects backup quarterback Sam Darnold to be out for an extended period of time with an ankle injury.

It takes four to six weeks to recover.

It could take some time for the injury to heal. We can put him on the injured reserve if it's four games.

Carolina might have lost kicker Zane Gonzalez for the season with a groin injury that he sustained while warming up on the sideline. The general manager and the special teams coach are looking for someone to take their place.

Rhule said that they need to attack that. It's a big thing for us.

The team is considering placing him on injured reserve as they seek further opinions on the extent of the injury. If he's on the 53-man roster, he'll be able to return from injured reserve.

The injury leaves the team with two quarterbacks, starter Baker Mayfield and former XFL starter P.J.Walker, on the roster.

Rhule said he is confident that Walker, who has started two of the past three seasons, can back up. Rhule said that Ben McAdoo and Sean Ryan were pleased with the way Walker played Friday after a rough outing the week before.

Walker completed 8 of 10 passes for 50 yards and no turnovers after he had two picks and a fumbled the ball.

In the third quarter, he was hit from behind and had to throw the ball away. The replay showed that Brewer rolled over the player.

The Carolinas lost a quarterback in a preseason game for the second week in a row. The third-round pick was hurt against New England.

The Carolinas planned to keep three quarterbacks, with one of them being Corral. The mindset to keep two was altered by Corral's injury.

In his final tuneup, he looked good before facing his old team. Against Buffalo's second-string defense, he completed nine of 15 passes for 89 yards and two touchdown.

The quarterback was 13-for-22 for 134 yards and two touchdown.

Rhule said that he kept the ball out of harms way. He was not afraid to throw the ball.

Heading into the opener, he feels good about the team.

We haven't been out there as a complete unit yet, but I feel good about the guys up front and the weapons we have at the skill positions.

The running back didn't play in any of the preseason games to make sure he was healthy for the season.

"I'm very confident in this group that we have going forward," he stated.
