Scorecard

England won the second Test against South Africa by an aggregate of 85 runs to level the series.

The home side broke the stubborn resistance of the South Africans with the ball.

When the ball was swung back and forth, England reduced South Africa to 543.

They were held up by an obdurate stand of 87 over 43 overs between the two men.

The captain removed both over the course of a couple of overs.

The second new ball was taken over by James Anderson and Ollie Robinson, who shared the final five wickets for seven runs. Robinson and Anderson both finished with 3.

The series is set to be decided in the final Test at the Kia Oval on 8 September.

England produce their best to level the series

This was England's best performance of the four wins at the beginning of the summer.

They were aided by South Africa's decision to bat on a first morning that was ideal for bowling.

Their hitters adapted to the situation. Under-pressure opener Zak Crawley deserves credit for his 38 in trying circumstances, even though he stood out with his century.

England's bowlers exploited the conditions on the first day, then continued to bowl South Africa out on the second and third days.

At 40, Anderson continues to make the ball dance, the returning Robinson looks even better than the bowler who impressed in his first year in Test cricket, while Stokes was indefatigable in a 14- over spell either side of tea. Everything was grabbed by England.

In the first Test, South Africa got a lot wrong. The inclusion of two spinners was justified, but the error at the toss is difficult to defend.

Van der Dussen has been ruled out of the third Test with a broken finger, which makes his score of 41 all the more impressive.

Is England going to The Oval with a lot of confidence?

Awesome England break South Africa resistance

England wrapped up victory on a sunny Saturday thanks to a great display with the ball.

South Africa were hit by an England attack that was finding reverse swing on a pitch that could not be trusted.

Stuart Broad had Markram nick to second slip after bowling him off a no-ball and Anderson removed Dean Elgar off his stump.

If it weren't for the bravery of Van der Dussen and the defiance of Petersen, South Africa would have been destroyed.

If England had appealed, Van der Dussen would have been caught behind the fourth-wall.

The game was opened immediately after the break. Van der Dussen tried to hit a wide one, but was caught by Petersen for 42.

Anderson used the new ball to bowl Simon Hamer through the gate, signalling the beginning of a quick end.

Robinson took the edge of both Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, who were both on the opposite side of Anderson.

Robinson sent Lungi's bails into the air to the delight of the crowd.
