The gaming handles that users can create and publicly display when playing their selections of mobile games are being tested by the streaming service. Members should be able to identify and invite other users to play games based on their handles, as well as see where they rank on the charts.

I was able to experience the feature for myself after updating my app. I was given the option to create and manage the game handle associated with my profile on the streaming service. Once you input the name of your choice, your game handle will be checked to make sure it's unique.

The in-app text says that your game handle is a unique public name. Your name and profile icon won't be seen by other people. Change your game handle at any time.

When you invite and play with other members, you can use game handles. You will be able to check when certain users are online or offline, and it will show you where you are on the leaderboards. I didn't see any options to invite friends or view the leaderboards when I played with the new feature.

The game handles were rolled out in a number of titles last month. It is unclear if and when the game handles will be rolled out to more of the games on the service.

Last November, the streaming service launched games, but they haven't taken off yet. According to a recent report from CNBC, only a small percentage of subscribers interact with the games on a daily basis.

Head's Up!, a game popularized by the Ellen Degeneres show, has been added to the library of games. As the company scrambles to get its wavering subscriber count back on an upward trend, its games could play a bigger role.

There is a series produced by The Verge with the internet service provider.
