Pascal Gross, Brighton, Leeds
Pascal Gross' third goal of the season earned Brighton their first home victory of the season

A new club record of nine consecutive top-flight matches without defeat was set by the Seagulls as they beat Leeds to end their opponents' perfect start to the season.

The winning goal came from a Leandro Trossard pass and was a powerful right-footed strike.

Solly March twice shot straight at Illan Meslier after cutting on to his left foot from the right flank, but he missed the target.

March, whose last league goal came in November 2020, raced clear in the early stages of the second half, but he was again denied by Meslier.

Luis Sinisterra failed to hit the target after Pervis Estupinan inadvertently sent his clearance towards the far post while attempting to break up a fight.

After four games, the Seagulls have moved up to second in the league.

Brighton patience pays off

During the 1981-87 season, an eight-game sequence without defeat was set by the Seagulls.

Graham Potter will surely be happy with his team's start to the season, but the Seagulls' inability to score in front of goal remains a concern.

They had failed to score in six of their previous nine home league matches, and for a while it looked as though their wastefulness would cost them victory.

March had a chance to give his team a first-half lead, but he failed to hit the target.

Trossard was in space on the left-hand side but often chose the wrong option, turning back into traffic when he should have gotten his shot.

Gross turned an Estupinan delivery wide of the target at the near post after the break, but the Austrian redeemed himself with an excellent finish midway through the second half to earn his side a richly deserved three points.

During their best spell of the game, Sinisterra and Rodrigo both shot narrowly wide, but Gross' strike came during their worst period of the game.

The visitors were unable to build on last weekend's victory as Diego Llorente headed off target.
