There was triple-digit heat in the region when a 5-year-old boy died in a vehicle outside his school.

The school district police chief said the boy is related to a staff member at the school.

The high in McAllen on Thursday was 101.

The chief of police for the La Joya school district said that the boy could not be resuscitated after being unresponsive for about four hours.

The officials did not say how the boy died or how long he was in the car.

When the child was found, he was not breathing, according to the sheriff's office.

Gisela Saenz said the boy was in school. She said that schools are safe.

The branch of one of the nation's largest child care companies is under investigation after a video of a mother trying to get her child out of a locked room went viral.

She asked the community to keep the family and staff at Americo Paredes Elementary in their thoughts and prayers.

The incident is being investigated by school district police, the sheriff's office and child protective services.

Children can die in hot cars. According to the NHTSA, 23 children died of heatstroke in the US last year.

According to NoHeatStroke.org, there have been 18 vehicular heatstroke deaths this year.
